Why
Overview
_It is no surprise that children are not getting enough daily exercise or that test scores are low. What is surprising, however, is research supporting the connection between physical activity and the brain’s cognitive achievement. I have implemented an innovative plan that builds upon compelling research indicating a direct correlation between increased heart rate (and therefore more oxygen and blood pumping to the brain) and cognitive performance (the brain’s ability to function and learn). This effort strives to improve standardized test scores in English Language Arts and mathematics through increased cardiovascular activity. Through generous grant funding from ???, Bowler Elementary is adopting similar fitness practices used by schools across the nation who have seen great success through their innovation and creativity..
Will it make a Difference?
_While there is no magic solution, I am confident that, yes, this effort will make a difference. For four years now, students at Bowler Elementary have not demonstrated Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English Language Arts and mathematics. Of particular alarm are the bottom quartile scores of fifth grade students. If these students don’t achieve grade-standard skills, their ability to thrive next year in middle school will be challenged, perhaps affecting them for years to come. We are working hard to help them succeed.
